Chapter 3
Okay, I know that going swimming maybe wouldn’t seem like something you do instead of hanging out with your friends – but for me, it is. I’d give up many experiences so I could go swimming, unfortunately I can’t do that very much because of my parents. On Sundays I sometimes have to go to the church! I anyone got to know that, I’d die! I got to the parking lot by First Beach and stopped my skateboard. I took it under my arm and started walking down the path that led to the beach. My parents thought that I was at Nessie’s house, I knew they’d approve of her if they met her – she was pale and lived in Forks, the only thing I can think of that they wouldn’t like ‘bout her is that she’s dating a Quileute, but there was no need to tell them that.
I got down to the beach and took my jeans and tank top of so I only wore my blue, black and pink Warp bikini top and black bikini bottom. I took my black Nike training shorts out of my bag and put them on too, I always wore training shorts when I was swimming. I know, they’re not for swimming, but I like wearing them anyway so, live with it. I had gone straight home after school and packed my bag with the shorts, towel, underwear and bra, the bikini – minus shorts – I had put on under my clothes. I had said I was going over to Nessie and then I had gone to the beach instead. So now, here I was, in my bikini – I count the shorts as a part of the bikini – and ready to jump into the water. I looked around me and saw – to my right – a high cliff over the water. I smiled to myself and packed my clothes into my bag and hung it over my shoulder. I took my skate board under my arm again and started jogging towards the cliff. It would be perfect diving from and I didn’t want to leave my stuff on the beach where people could take it. I dumped my bag and board between a rock and a bush – I think the bag fell into the bush, good now it was hard to see it – up on the cliff and walked towards the edge. When I stood on the edge I looked down on the water below me.
“Wow!” I mumbled to myself. If was a long way down, but I wasn’t very afraid, I’d done thins before. Not from here, but other places. I took five long steps backwards and then stopped. I inhaled and exhaled heavily and then ran. I dove from the edge and felt the air around me as I flew. It took only a second but it felt like an hour until I hit the water. First my hands which I held straight out in front of me, then my arms, head, chest, stomach, legs and last my feet. It was wonderful being back in water again and when I got my head out of the water I took a deep breath for air and smiled – then my eyes got cold and I felt like a painful burn by my lower back and clenched my teeth together not to scream.
“Ow!” I said when it as suddenly as it started, stopped. “What was that?” I felt around my eyes with my fingers but didn’t feel anything weird; I swam back to land so I could take a look and my back and gasped. On my lower back – where it had felt like I burned – I now had something that looked like a tattoo! It was deep blue and looked like a tribal. It looked like it started in the middle of my lower back and went on both to the left and to the right. In the middle, under the tattoo – if it was a tattoo – there also was two lines of waves… I think. It looked kind of cool, but it was also creepy, how and why did I get it? I felt a strong need to get back to the water so I walked back into it and didn’t stop until I had water up to my stomach. Once again I turned my upped body so I could look at the tattoo. What was I supposed to do now? Go home and say ‘mom, dad, I got a tribal tattoo on my lower back, I hope that’s okay?’ not exactly. Then something hit me, my lower back – and the tattoo – was under the water, so the tattoo should look a little wavy and cloudy, but it didn’t. It looked just normal, as if there was no water there. Now when I thought ‘bout it, I saw everything under the water just as clear as I saw everything over the water. Okay, this was getting kinda’ weird. Then I heard footsteps coming this way on the path from the parking lot. I turned that way and heard Nessie and Clair laughing together with three other women I didn’t know, Embry, Quil and Jake were talking ‘bout cars, Seth, Collin and Brady ‘bout some videogame and I also heard three other men that I didn’t know talk ‘bout a bonfire that was coming up this weekend. That was 14 persons, but I also hear one more person walking with them, but he or she was quiet. I’m pretty sure it isn’t normal that I can hear all this and I didn’t wanted to see any of them – even if they’re my friends – until I’ve figured at least some of this out. Then I heard someone stop – and be’cause of that everyone stopped.
“What is that smell?” One of the unknown men asked.
They were almost out on the beach now, I couldn’t see the yet but I heard someone sniff the air and then Seth exclaimed “It’s Sam!”
“Sam is right there, you moron.” The 15th person who hadn’t talked before said, she was a woman.
“No, not that Sam…” Collin said.
“… Samantha, the new girl.” Brady continued.
“C’mon, Em!” Claire said happily.
“It looks like Sam’s here, we’ll introduce you.” Nessie said, and then she, Claire and a woman I’ve never seen before came out on the beach and looked around. Fast I took a deep breath and dove under the water and swam away from the beach – but I think Nessie saw me.
Even if I love swimming I’ve never been good at holding my breath and after 30 seconds I started getting dizzy and my head started to hurt, but I pushed myself and suddenly I couldn’t hold it any longer. I automatically took a deep breath – but nothing happened! I stopped and looked around confused just to check that I really was under water. Yes, seaweed, stones and fishes, defiantly under water. I tested and took a couple of small breaths, I felt the water coming into my mouth and nose, but in some magical way it didn’t get down to my lungs. I could breathe under water! Oh my god! And the fishes didn’t seem to be afraid of me; they swam around me just as if I was a fish too. I looked down at my body to make sure I hadn’t turned into a fish and sighed relieved when I looked just normal. I swam up to the water surface and looked around; I couldn’t see First Beach anywhere! How far had I gone? I’d only bean swimming in like, half a minute. Could that mean…? No, I hadn’t been swimming that fast, hadn’t I? Or maybe I had… I had been so focused on not being at First Beach that I hadn’t paid any attention to how fast I was. Just to test it I swam back again – under water –, not as fast as I could, but faster than normal. This time I was back in the water of First Beach within three minutes.
When I was about 1500 foot from the beach I could already see it and everything under the water clearly – when I was under the water. Right then someone splashed through water surface with his arms first, just like I had. I think he was one of the unknown men who I’d heard. I was too far away so he couldn’t see me, but I saw him clearly. He looked practically as all the other guys in their group, so there’s no need to describe him. When he had moved out of the way someone else came flying of off the edge of the cliff… on it was two persons. Quil and Claire. Quil had his arms around Claire and they jumped – not dove – with their feet first. It looked so cute. I smiled for myself. Then I remembered something, my clothes and board! I couldn’t go home in this, my dad would kill me! But my bag was up at the cliff and there was no way I could get up there without anyone noticing me, and I can’t wait until they’re done, ‘cause then I’m going to get home way too late. Okay, now I have a big problem. But, they haven’t been her for more than five minutes. I can come from the other end of the beach – in normal speed – and just tell them that I was over there – mostly under the water – and didn’t see them until then. Yes! That’s what I’m going to do.
I was at the other side of the beach in one second and then started swimming back again. I saw Jake and Nessie dive from the cliff and splash into the water together. Claire saw me first.
“Sam!” She shouted. “You’re here?”
“Yup, I was over there” I nodded behind me “and didn’t see you guys ‘till now.” I saw Nessie raise one eyebrow and give me a ‘you’re lying’-look. I tried to give her an innocent smile but I’m not sure if worked. “Anyway, I was just goin’ to get my stuff and go home.” I got out of the water and walked up the path that led up on the cliff trying as nonchalant as possible hide my back, but I don’t think it looked very nonchalant. I got up on the cliff which was now empty ‘cause everyone had jumped. I took my shorts of and dried myself with my towel. I put my jeans over the bikini and just as I put my tank top over my bikini top Nessie came up on the cliff again. I stood with my back to where you come up on the cliff without really thinking of it but now I felt Nessie’s gaze burn a hole in my lower back where the tattoo was.
“You got a-“ I quickly pulled my tank top over the tattoo and rushed to Nessie’s side, putting my hand over her mouth.
“Don’t say anything!” I whispered to her and looked down at the others; to my relief they didn’t seem to pay any attention to us.
“Look,” Nessie said and pushed my hand away “I saw you in the water, you were here all the time.”
I sighed heavily. “Do we have to talk ‘bout i?”
She shook her head. “Not if you don’t want to, but I’m a good listener and if you want me to I’ll keep my mouth shut.”
“Don’t tell anyone ‘bout the tattoo.” I pleased. “I’ll think ‘bout it, right now I just wanna go home, but if I want to talk I’ll tell ya.”
“Good,” Nessie nodded “and I won’t tell anyone ‘bout the tattoo.”
“Thanks.” I hugged her tight and followed her down to the beach.
When we got down Nessie stopped me and turned so we were facing everyone. “Hey, guys!” Everyone looked at her. “Guys, this is Sam, she’s going home now but I thought I’d’ introduce you first. Sam those you haven’t met before are Emily, Rachel and Kim, Leah, Jared, Paul and Sam.” Nessie pointed everyone out. Emily, Rachel and Kim sat in the sand with Claire talking, Leah laid tanning on a towel and Sam, Jared and Paul were in the water with the rest of the guys. Emily had a big scar across the right side of her face, but I tried not to look at it.
“So you’re the Sam Clair have been talkin’ so mush ‘bout? It’s nice meeting you.” Emily said and waved at me. All of them – apart from Leah who just ignored us – said one ‘hey’, ‘hi’ or ‘hello’ each and then I went home.
“Did you have a good time at your friend’s house?” Mom asked when I closed the door behind me.
“Yeah… it was great.” I said.
“What did you do?” Shit! At least I’m a pretty good liar. That didn’t sound good.
“Um… nothin’… we just… chilled in her garden…?” It sounded like a question, but mom didn’t seem to notice.
“That’s good.” She nodded and went back to her crossword or whatever it was.

Dear diary,
2day something really scary happened! I was @ First Beach in La Push 2 swim and when I got in the water it – for a second – started burning on my lower back and my eyes got cold. I got out of the water 2 check my lower back and I had a deep blue tribal tattoo there! My eyes felt OK, though. I then felt a strong need 2 get back in2 the water so I did, and I could see everything under water as clear as over the water! Then I heard some friends from school come walking towards the beach. I could hear who many they were and everything! A normal person wouldn’t have heard them. I didn’t wanted them 2 C the tattoo so I swan – under the water – as fast as I could and when I couldn’t hold my breath any longer I automatically took a deep breath, but nothing happened! I could breathe under the water. I swan up 2 C were I was and saw that I had ended up right out in the middle of the ocean! I had swum so fast I almost think I turned invisible!
So, as a conclusion; 1) I got a tribal tattoo, 2) I saw everything under water clearly, 3) I heard everything, 4) I could breathe under water, and 5) I swum extremely fast.
I also have this feeling that none of the guys plus Nessie and Leah in Seth’s group of friends are normal people, I get weir vibes from them.
Night…
That night I couldn’t sleep, I had to mush to think about. What was wrong with me? How did I got that tattoo? Was it because I jumped into the water? I’ve been swimming many times before, why now? Why could I see clearly under water? Why could I breathe under water? Why was I suddenly so fast? Why did I hear everything? What was happening to me? Eventually I fell asleep, and little did I know that I was going to be a part of something big and bad.

Chapter 2
When I to the lunch line I saw a familiar head a few paces in front of me, and he seemed to know I was there or something ‘cause he turned around just when I was about to call his name.
“Hey, Sam.” Seth said and went over to stand by me in the line.
“Hey.”
“You don’t like Mr. Smith?” Seth asked me.
My eyes winded a little. “What? How do you know that?”
He chuckled a little. “Well, things spread fast here.”
I raised one eyebrow at him. “I happened like, five minutes ago, stuff can’t spread that fast.”
“Yeah, it can here. It’s a small school, ya’ know.”
“Whatever.” I said and rolled my eyes at him. I got three glasses of water – I’d learned how to carry many glasses of water at the same time by the years – and a slice of pizza, Seth got… I don’t know what Seth got, but I’m pretty sure he got half of the food in the cafeteria.
“C’mon, you can sit with us.” Seth said and started walking towards the other side of the cafeteria.
“Who’s ‘us’?” I asked.
“Me, Quil, Embry, Brady, Collin, Claire and Nessie.”
“Aha… is it the ones you were with this mornin’? ‘cause they’re not here.”
“No, they’re sitting outside, we always do that.” Then I noticed the door than he was heading towards, well, I had seen it there before but I hadn’t really paid it any attention.
When we got outside I spotted the group of kids sitting together in the grass, but now there were one more guy. What the fuck? Who was he? He sat beside the pale girl with his arm around his shoulder, just like the guy I talked to this morning had his arm over the Quileute girl. Seth didn’t seemed to mind the new guy being there, ‘cause he just started walking towards them. I’m pretty sure the new guy was a part of their group too since he too was an incredible big Quileute. I followed Seth like a little lame lost puppy. I was lost into my own thoughts so when Seth stopped I almost walked into him.
“This is Sam.” Seth said and sat down in the grass.
“Hi, Sam.” The Quileute girl said excitedly. “I’m Claire.”
“Hi.” I said and sat down with Seth on my left and the pale girl – who must be Nessie – on my right. I drank the first glass of water in a few seconds and put it down on the ground. We sat in a little circle and I had everyone’s attention – they were looking at me with that ‘figuring-out-a-hard-problem-look’ again, it was getting kind of weird. “Why are you looking at me like that? You were doing it this mornin’ too.” They all blinked and shook their heads as if they needed to get back to reality.
“Sam, this is Embry, Brady, Collin, Claire – as you already know –, Quil, Jake and Nessie.” Seth said and pointed everyone out for me. Embry sat next to Seth, Brady sat next Embry, Collin sat next to Brady and then it went on that way ‘till Nessie who sat beside me. Weird name by the way, Nessie, like the loch ness monster.
“Which grade do you go to, Sam? How old are you?” Nessie asked.
“11th, junior, 16 years.” I answered.
“Just like Seth, then.” Jake said.
Nessie turned to him and said “yeah, that might explain why the know each other, they have had a class together.” With a ‘dah’-expression, Jake just rolled his eyes at her and took a slice of pizza from Quil’s plate.
“Hey! Dude, get your own pizza!” Quil exclaimed and took up his plate from the ground so Jake wouldn’t take anything else.
“I graduated last year; if I go in there they’ll kick me out.” Jake took a bite out of the pizza.
“It’s not like they would be able to.” I mumbled and took a bit out of my own pizza slice – which I, for my defense, had not stolen from someone else. Out of the corner of my eye I saw smile, he’d probably heard what I’d said. “So which grades do you all go to?” I asked them all.
“I and Nessie are both freshmen…” Claire said.
“… I’m 15 and Claire’s 14.” Nessie continued.
“Brady and I are sophomores, we both are 16.” Collin said.
“I and Quil are seniors, I’m 18 and Quil turns 18 in November.” Embry said.
I looked at Jake. “And you?”
“I graduated last year and now I’m 19.”
“Aha…” I said and nodded my head. “But… why are you here, then? When I graduate I won’t go back to school at lunch time even it that was the only place on earth not on fire.”
“I’m here for Nessie.” Jake said he wasn’t looking at anymore; he was staring into Nessie’s eyes with so much love in his eyes that I had to look away.
“Nessie and Jake are in love.” Seth said to me.
I looked at him with one eyebrow raised. “No shit?” When accidently I looked back towards Nessie and Jake they were making out. I quickly looked away. Okay, they’re cute together, but really? In the schoolyard? They looked like they could rip their clothes of here and now.
Collin cleared his throat loudly.
“Get a room!” Brady said loudly so everyone around us looked. Jake and Nessie lend away from each other. Nessie blushed a cute hot pink and smiled sheepishly at me but Jake just glared at Brady and Collin. Mental not; do not interrupt Jake when he’s making out with Nessie!
“I’ll go get some more water.” I said and stood up. “Anyone wanna join me?”
“I can go with you.” Claire said and stood up too.
Quil looked skeptically at me. “What?” I asked.
“How much water do you drink? In 15 minutes you’ve already drunk three glasses.”
I shrugged. “I dunno, I’ve always loved water.”
“C’mon, Sam.” Clair took my hand and dragged me back into the school building.
When the doors closed behind us she let go of me. “So, you’re with Quil?” I asked her.
“Yeah…” She said and got a dreamy look on her face. “He’s just… I don’t know, he has been my best friend ever since I was born and then suddenly we just became more. I know he’s three years older than me, but – as Jake sad many years ago – age’s just a number, baby. Quil’s kind, funny, warm-“
“-Hot.” I interrupted her. The dreamy look on her face disappeared and she seemed to have come back to reality.
“Yeah, that’s defiantly a plus.” She laughed. “Do you have a boyfriend?”
“Nu-huh.” I said and shook my head. “Never a boyfriend, sure, I’ve dated a few guys but I’ve never met someone I really like.” I filled two glasses with water and gave them to Claire. “But, I’ve never met someone who has wanted to ever see me again after they’ve met my parents.” I joked.
Clair huffed. “They can’t be that bad.”
“Yes they are,” I said and started walking back to the others with one glass of water in each hand. “For example, if they knew I’m talkin’ to you I’d almost get grounded.”
“No way.”
“Yes way, they’re believers and I’m not allowed to talk to ‘black people’.” You could clearly hear the air quotes in my voice.
“S’okay if I take this glass?” Claire asked me as we sat down with the others – me between Seth and Nessie and Claire with Quil.
“Sure.” I said and took my other glass that Claire had carried for me. “Thanks.”
I had two classes after lunch, English and gym – blah! The only good thing ‘bout gym is when we go swimming, I have no idea why, but I’ve always – and I mean always – loved water. When it was raining, to swim in, to drink – I even liked winter just ‘cause snow and ice technically are water too.
I slammed my locker shout with my board in one hand and my bag over my shoulder. I hadn’t gotten any homework – yet – so my bag was almost empty. I heard Quil, Claire, Embry, Nessie, Brady, Collin and Seth come round the corner of the corridor and walking towards me. I turned around and met up with them halfway.
“Hey, guys.” I said.
“Hey, Sam.” Seth said.
“We were wondering if you’d like to come with us to Emily’s Café.” Nessie said. “Emily’s Clair’s aunt and she’s like the best cook ever.”
“Please, don’t talk ‘bout her like that.” Claire said and Nessie looked confused, was it a bad thing that she thought Emily was a great cook? “It’ll look like I’m good at cooking too.” Claire finished.
Quil rolled his eyes. “You’re always so dramatic.”
“Yeah, and that’s why ya’ll like me so much.” Claire said smugly.
Seth cleared his throat. “Guys, back to Sam, would you like to come?”
“Sorry, it’s my first day here and I already have something else I’m supposed to do today.” I said, and I was really sorry, I’d loved to hang out with them.
“’Kay,” Nessie said. “Some other time, then.”
“Sure, I’d love to.” I nodded and walked towards the exit.

Into the Sea, kap. 1
20th September, 6.30 am
Dear diary,
2day is my first day of school; I’m hoping 2 make a good first impression – dah. I’ve decided not 2 let anyone C how nervous I am, that would just make people think I’m a chicken – no offence chickens, it’s just an expression. We came here yesterday – me, my dad and my mom – and I’m supposed 2 start school 2day. I barely had time 2 go check the location of the school! And it would not be a good thing if I didn’t knew where the school was. That would just be embarrassing. Where is it we now live, then? We moved 2 the small town Forks in Washington, but Forks High School had no more places for juniors so I have 2 go 2 the La Push High School. La Push is a Native American reservation and it takes only 45 min 2 go from our house 2 the school, and 20 on my skateboard. My parents aren’t very happy ‘bout the fact that I’m going 2 go 2 school in La Push with ‘black kids’. My parents are all ‘no homosexual people, no black people, no bisexual people’ and it’s pretty annoying ‘cause I have no problem with it. For example they want me 2 talk 2 the other students or the teachers – unless they’re white – as little as possible. Don’t they want me 2 have any friends @ school, or what? Well, if I asked them, they’d say no.
“Samantha! You have to get out of bed now!” I heard my mom call from outside my room.
I sighed and laid my diary on my bedside table. “Okay!” I called back.
I heard her walk away from my bedroom door as I stood up from my bed and walked over to my closet. Hmm, what to wear today? I found a blue pair of baggy jeans and a purple tank top that I threw on and as usual I had to wear accessories – a loose tie and my Vans cap. Before I walked out to the kitchen to eat breakfast I put my diary in my shoulder bag (the shoulder bag is my school bag) and my keys and mobile phone in my jeans pockets.
When I got out to the kitchen my mom and dad already sat there drinking their disgusting coffee, eating sandwiches and reading the newspaper. I dumped my bag on the floor by the sink and took a bowl from one of the cabinets and a spoon out of a drawer and sat down together with mom and dad.
“Good morning.” Dad said to me and looked up from his boring newspaper.
“Good morning, Samantha.” Mom said as she – too – looked up from her newspaper.
“Mornin’.” I said and poured milk in my bowl. Dad cleared his throat and looked and me. I sighed and said; “Good morning.” Dada nodded and went back to his newspaper. I put some cereal together with the milk in my bowl and started eating. Everything – apart of the sound of us eating – was totally silent. How could they eat like this?! I had never understood why they never talked when we ate and I had stopped trying to make them, it never worked.
After I had eaten I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and hair and put on some makeup. I never wore much makeup; it just looked cheap and scary when girls had overdone it. I put my brown, wavy hair in two loose ponytails – one on each side of my head – and then put on some black mascara and light pink lip gloss. I smiled at my reflection before I walked out from the bathroom and into the kitchen where I had left my bag. I had to go through the kitchen to get to the front door. I took up my bag from the floor as I passed it when I got out of the kitchen I couldn’t see my skateboard anywhere. I had left if leaning against the wall beside the front door yesterday.
“Where’s my board?” I asked as I turned around to look at my parents.
“It was in the way so I put it just outside the door, honey.” Mom said and did a gesture with her hand towards the door.
“What?! You can’t leave it outside for the night!” I exclaimed. “It would have got ruined if it had bean raining.”
Both mom and dad ignored what I’d said. “Now remember; do not talk to the black teachers or students if you don’t have to.” Dad said.
I rolled my eyes but said “sure, sure.” As I walked out the door and found my dear skateboard outside waiting for me. I took it and walked out on the driveway where I put it down on the ground, stood on it and started riding down the street.
When I got to the school I could feel everyone watch me. I took my skateboard under my arm and walked past everyone into the building with my head held high. I went to the office to get my papers and then I went to my locker. I had number 103, it was not long from the front doors so I didn’t needed to walk through the whole school to get to it. It was still 10 minutes left ‘till the classes would start so there stood groups of people talking in the corridors. One group with five incredible big boys and two very cute girls were all looking at me weirdly. Not ‘she’s the new, weird girl’-looks, they looked more like they all were trying to figure out something really hard. All five guys looked practically the same – beautiful bronze skin, dark hair and eyes, high cheekbones and very muscular. The girls didn’t look the same – heck! One of them was as pale as snow – but they were both very cute. The pale one had big, brown eyes and her hair went down to her lumbar and was wavy and had a unique mix of bronze and orange. The other girl had the same bronze skin, high cheekbones, dark eyes and dark hair as the guys, but hers was cut down by her shoulders. She and the guys are probably Quileute. All the guys looked like they were different ages – from my age and up – and both girls looked like they were freshmen. One of the oldest guys had his arm over the Quileute girl’s shoulders. I could feel their gases on my back as I turned around and unlocked my locker. I hang my bag on a hook that was in my locker and leaned my skateboard against the right wall in it. Then I took up my schedule to see what my first class was. I sighed heavily. Great, math as the first lesion on the Monday. I folded my schedule and put it in my back pocket – it could come in handily sometime. Since I didn’t had any books jet I just put a pencil and eraser in my pockets and grabbed my diary. Maybe it sounds lame to take your diary with you, but I always do that. I wonder if it’s safe to leave my skateboard in my locker or would someone steal it? I could still feel the group looking at me so I could as well ask them if it’s safe.
I turned towards them “Hey! Is it safe to leave my skateboard here?”
“I think so.” The one with his arm over the Quileute girl said.
“Okay, but if it’s gone when I get back here it’s on you.” I said as I slammed my locker shut. He grinned at me as I walked past them and towards my class. I smiled back. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all? I mean, I could talk to them in school; I just didn’t need to tell mom or dad.
As I walked down the hallways I felt everyone looking curiously at me. No one dared to say ‘hi’, but a few people smiled friendly at me.
When I got to the math classroom it was about half empty. The desks stood two and two and I got to sit beside a boy named Joseph. He was a total math geek and could everything. He seemed pretty nice, he introduced himself to me and helped me when I got stuck but other than that we didn’t talk much.
My second class was art and apparently that class never is in the classroom when it’s warm outside. Some girl told me that when I was just about to open the door to the classroom and she walked by. She told me to go out the front doors and to the left side of the school, where there were a big oak in the grass. Mrs. Oland always has her classes there.
“Can I sit here?”
“Holy shit!” I exclaimed and jumped a couple of inches. When I looked up I saw one of the big guys who had looked at me weirdly before.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” He said.
I shook my head. “No, s’okay, I was in my own little world.” I patted the spot in the grass beside me. “Sit down.”
He sat down and laid his stuff beside him in the grass. No one said anything. Awkward silence, next.
“So…” I said awkwardly but trailed off; I didn’t know what to say.
“I’m Seth.” He broke the silence and held out his hand.
“Sam.” I shook his hand. He looked questioning so I explained the name thing for him. “My real name is Hannah Samantha Piece but that sounds way to girly so instead of being called Samantha people call me Sam.”
“Aha.” Seth nodded slowly.
Then Mrs. Oland clapped her hands together and started the lesion. “Okay, today we’re starting on something new. You shall pick a patch from my hat” she pointed at a black hat that stood upside down on a stone under the oak with small, white paper notes in it. “On every patch I have written something, then paint it, sketch it, build a little sculpture of it, take photos, or whatever you can think of. Okay? And this is a big work. We’re going to work on it until Christmas break so take your time to plan what to do today.” Students agreed with ‘sure’-s, ‘okay’-s and ‘yep’-s and started getting up. When I got up Seth took my arm and dragged me down in the grass again.
“What?” I asked.
“It’s going to take awhile for the class to be done with that” he nodded towards where the class had crowded around Mrs. Oland’s hat. “We could as well wait here until they’re done.”
“But… I what if I’ll get something like… like… I dunno, something really boring.”
“You don’t get to choose what you get; even the first one can get something boring.”
I opened my mouth to protest, but shut it again. He was right; all the little papers were folded so you couldn’t see what was written on them.
“If you got to choose, what would you choose?” Seth asked curiously.
“Hmm, something like…” I thought for a moment “Sadness or music, maybe? You?”
Seth thought for a moment. “I dunno, not too hard, I don’t have much time working at home, and art isn’t really my subject.” Seth stood up and held his hand out for me. “C’mon, let’s go see what we do get.”
“Okay.” I took his hand and let him drag me up from the grass. Now everyone were standing or sitting in groups together and talking about how to work with their topic. When we got to the hat I closed my eyes and took a piece of paper.
Quileute legends
I smiled. This was way better than sadness of music!
“What did you get?” Seth asked.
“Quileute legends!” I exclaimed happily.
Seth raised an eyebrow at me. “Seriously?”
“Aha.” I nodded my head eagerly. I had always bean fascinated by Native American legends, and was great to have it as a topic in art, my favorite class.
“Quileute legends?” Seth asked me doubtfully. “I mean, some of them are cool but how do you think you’re going to make our legends into an art work?”
I shrugged. “Sketch illustrations out of your legends – like the thunderbird with a whale in it’s claws and that kind of stuff – and I can always make you and your friends dress up as charters out of the legends and take photos.” I smiled one of my most evil smiles at him and then said: “I can see it; you, on the beach, dressed up as a ‘cold one’… and the others on boats in the water, trying to escape you.” While gesturing with my hands in front off me.
“Not gonna happen, Sam.” Seth said and took a note himself.
“So… what did you get?” I asked.
He unfolded it and showed it to me. “Friendship.” He said. “How am I supposed to do that?”
“Can’t tell you, it’s your job to figure that out.” I said smugly.
Seth sighed heavily and went back to where we had been sitting before. I followed him and sat down opposite him. I opened my diary in my lap and took my pencil. Since this was something I liked and was interested in, I was going to write my plans and notes in my diary instead of on some boring striped papers like the rest of the class – inclusive Seth.
20th September, about 9.20 am
Dear diary,
Right now I’m sitting in art class – outside, in the grass! ‘till it gets cold, all art classes are going to B out here. Anyways, today every1 got a topic which you’re supposed to work with ‘till x-mas break and
“What’s that?”
I looked up at Seth who was looking at me curiously. “Um, my diary.”
“You do know that you’re not supposed to write in your diary right now, right?” Seth asked. “You’re supposed to plan how to make Quileute legends art.… And friendship” Seth’s last two words he said sarcastically.
“Ha! Good try, but I won’t do your work.” I said and laughed. “But, I’m writing it in my diary. Since this art work is something I’m really excited about I’m going to take notes and stuff in this.” I clapped the side of my diary that I was writing on.
Seth nodded and went back to his notebook, so I continued writing too.
guess what I got! Quileute legends! So cool! OK, now I have to start planning, here we go…
The rest of the lesion I and Seth spent planning our art works. We talked a lot and decided to help each other, for example Seth was going to help me to find interesting legends and I was going to help Seth with whatever he could need.
My third class was chemistry. It was so boring I’d probably fall asleep if I hadn’t had anything else to think about. I don’t know why, but I couldn’t get Seth and the rest of the kids in the group he was in of off my mind. Somewhere deep inside of me something said that they weren’t normal – that they weren’t human – but why would I think that? It was just some weird feeling I’d got when Seth took my arm to hold me back on the grass instead of go taking a paper note in art class. Totally weird. And I had already noticed that they kept to themselves, well, except from wen Seth talked to me in art class. Actually, it was as if the other students kept themselves from Seth and his group. Not as if they were afraid and didn’t wanted to get too close, it was more as if Seth and the others were some other sort of people – more powerful people – and the other students didn’t dared to talk to them, but they respected them. I wonder why, maybe my weird feeling had something to do with it. Should I avoid them just as everyone else did? Seth had been very nice to me.
“Miss. Piece, are you listening?” I was awoken out of my daydreaming by Mr. Smith’s irritating voice. My chemistry teacher looked firmly at me.
I sighed and shook my head. “No, I was thinking ‘bout other stuff.” What? I’d rather like people to tell the truth, I don’t like liars.
He narrowed his eyes at me. “Then I bet you’d love to share your ‘other stuff’ with the rest of the class.” By now everyone’s eyes was on me. I wasn’t that uncomfortable with everyone looking at me, just a little, and one thing I defiantly wasn’t afraid of was angry or irritated teachers.
“Actually, I’d rather not. I like having my mind private.” I hear several surprised gasps and some student’s mouth’s popped open as the bell rang and it was time for lunch. I took my new chemistry book and my diary in my hands and walked out of the classroom towards my locker.

Hejsan :)
